Chapter 11

“Mommy, are you OK?” Karsyn asked. She snuggled against Chelsea on the couch that evening and handed her a stuffed unicorn with rainbow wings.

Shaking herself out of her reverie, Chelsea forced a weak smile. “I’m just tired, cupcake.” Mentally tired. From all the crazy things I’m learning about myself!

After a night of tossing and turning, Chelsea was wide awake when her alarm gently prodded her from sleep with its harp song. It seemed that her brain just wouldn’t shut off. She bit her lip. A whole life that I didn’t know about. Did something happen to cause the miscarriage? Did we plan the pregnancy? Probably not. That’s awfully quick. Should I talk to Julian about this?

Do I even want to talk to him?

Karsyn eyed her suspiciously as Chelsea mindlessly dunked and redunked her tea bag in her mug. “Mommy. Are you nervous?”

“No, baby, I’m OK. Really. It’s just been a long week.”

“It’s Tuesday. Mommy, do you need a vacation?”

Chelsea laughed. “I think I do. Maybe the beach tonight?”

Clapping, Karsyn leaped from her chair, still holding her cereal spoon. “Yay yay yay! I want to build sandcastles and splash in the ocean!”

“Let’s do it then! I’ll take you there after school.”

Throwing her arms around Chelsea, spoon still in hand, Karsyn sunk her face into Chelsea’s hair. “I love you, Mommy.”

Chelsea teared up and smiled. “I love you too, baby.”

A short time later, Chelsea watched Karsyn get on the bus and then hopped in her car. She felt so much better physically since the accident, but her head was always a swarm of confusion, buzzing like bees around honey. When she pulled up outside of The Salty Cupcake, she sat in the car a few minutes and tried to regroup.

Breathe, Chelse. We will figure it all out. Everything that happens to me happens for me, and I will overcome the challenges. I know I’ve got this. “But crap, really, a baby with that guy?”

When she entered the kitchen, Chelsea went straight to the “Bake Me!” board, where she found a list of treats that they need for the day. She ran her finger over the list, determined to focus on something other than the craziness of her life. “I . . . want . . . a challenge. Ah, gluten-free chocolate doughnuts.” She erased it from the board and set to work.

She tapped the screen on the tablet above the counter and typed in the recipe. When it popped up, she got started. Focusing on that recipe would surely keep her from drifting back into the “what ifs” and “what the hells” from her therapy session and the past few days of bizarre happenings.

Pouring. Mixing. Chelsea finished the batter, prepped the pan, and placed the doughnuts in the oven. She ran a finger through the bowl to taste the mix. Eh. A little potato-y, but not terrible. The glaze would help. As she waited for the oven to ding, she created the dairy-free drizzle, in keeping with the allergy sensitive theme, and dipped a spoon in to taste.
